course FAQ
The GDA curriculum specifies Class 12 pass or equivalent, or a previous NSQF Level 3 qualification such as Home Health Aide Trainee. The prescribed training age is 16 years.
A General Duty Assistant supports the healthcare team in providing basic patient care. Responsibilities include assisting with bathing, grooming, dressing, nutrition and hydration, elimination needs, mobility and positioning, bed making, patient safety, documentation, infection control and biomedical waste management.
The course develops skills in patient care, bathing and grooming, nutrition and hydration, anatomy and physiology, elimination care, patient mobility and transfer, injury prevention, routine inpatient activities, documentation, bed making, first aid, infection control and biomedical waste management.
The GDA programme has a total duration of 420 hours, comprising 240 hours of theory and 180 hours of practical training, including 30 hours of employability skills.
Yes. The programme includes 180 hours of practical training. The curriculum also follows a learning-by-doing approach, with practical demonstrations and skill-lab activities.
GDA training can prepare learners for entry-level roles in hospitals, nursing homes, healthcare facilities, patient-care environments and other healthcare support services, subject to employer requirements.
The skills are relevant to different patient-care environments, including hospitals and nursing homes. Opportunities in home healthcare depend on the employer, role requirements and applicable policies.
The current curriculum specifies Class 12 pass or equivalent as the standard educational requirement, with an alternative NSQF Level 3 pathway. Therefore, students should check their eligibility against the current admission criteria.
No prior healthcare experience is specified for the standard Class 12 entry route. The course is designed to build the required knowledge and practical skills from the foundation level.
A GDA primarily provides basic patient-care and healthcare support under the supervision of the healthcare team. A nursing professional has a broader clinical role and requires separate professional education and registration. A GDA should not be considered a substitute for a qualified nurse.
The GDA programme is aligned with the Healthcare Sector Skill Council Qualification Pack HSS/Q5107, NSQF Level 4. Recognition and employment, however, depend on individual employers and their recruitment requirements.
Placement support, where offered, should be confirmed with PSA for the specific batch or programme. Completion of training does not automatically guarantee employment.
The programme combines theoretical knowledge, hands-on practical learning and employability skills. It focuses on patient care, safety, infection control, documentation and workplace readiness, helping learners develop practical skills for healthcare support roles.
